Yampa River

The Yampa River is the defining waterway of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Flowing for about 250 miles from the Flat Tops Wilderness to the Green River in Utah, it’s one of the last major free-flowing rivers in the Colorado River Basin. Through town, the Yampa is both a recreation hub and an important ecological resource. Locals and visitors use it year-round for fishing, tubing, kayaking, and riverside biking or walking along the Yampa River Core Trail.

Festivals, farmer’s markets, and community events often take place near its banks, and local fly shops provide guidance on conditions and hatches. It’s one of the rare rivers where you can catch trout within walking distance of coffee shops and ski lifts, making it both a working river and a centerpiece of Steamboat’s outdoor lifestyle.
