The Vermejo River flows through northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, with its headwaters in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Much of the river is within
Vermejo Park Ranch, a large private property owned by Ted Turner Reserves. Fishing here is strictly limited to guests and is managed for healthy wild trout populations, including Rio Grande cutthroat. Access outside the ranch is minimal, so most fishing opportunities require staying on the property. Learn more at
Vermejo Park Ranch.
The nearest full-service fly shop is generally in Trinidad, Colorado, about 40 miles northeast of the ranch entrance. Shops here can help with local fly patterns, fishing reports, and New Mexico license requirements. Because access is mostly private, it’s worth confirming arrangements before you make the trip.
Public camping options are limited near the Vermejo River itself, but Sugarite Canyon State Park, just outside Raton, NM, offers developed campsites and is within a short drive of the area. Primitive camping is also available in nearby Carson and Santa Fe National Forest lands, though they are farther from the Vermejo watershed.
